About this route

One of Europe's least-developed and most rewarding road trips. Start in colourful Tirana, then head south to Berat — the City of a Thousand Windows — and stone-roofed Gjirokastër, both UNESCO-listed. Visit the Blue Eye spring, swim off Ksamil's islets and walk through ancient Butrint, then follow the Riviera past turquoise coves at Himarë, Gjipe and Dhërmi. Climb into Llogara National Park where the mountains meet the Ionian Sea, drive north to Shkodër, and finish high in the Albanian Alps at Theth. The route is roughly 555 miles (890 km) and about 18–19 hours of actual driving, plus around 2 hr 30 min if you drive back to Shkodër at the end.

Day by day

Today's drive: none or minimal — a settle-in day. Morning: Skanderbeg Square and the Et'hem Bey Mosque. Lunch: traditional food at the New Bazaar. Afternoon: Bunk'Art 2 under the city centre. Evening: dinner and drinks in Blloku. Optional: the Dajti cable car, the Grand Park lake, or an evening food tour. Before you drive in Albania: read the driving notes below — local style, roads, fuel, cash, parking, data, hire and mountain roads.

  • Parking: city traffic is heavy — choose a hotel with parking and explore on foot or by taxi.
  • Campervans: stay at a campsite outside the busy centre.
  • Food: byrek, fërgesë, tavë kosi and qofte.
  • Roadly tip: get lek from an ATM today — you'll need cash in the south and the mountains.

Who this route suits

Families

good

Beaches, castles and easy walks — but some long, winding driving days.

  • · Ksamil and Livadhi have calm, shallow water for children.
  • · Butrint, Berat Castle and Gjirokastër Castle are great to explore.
  • · The Grunas Waterfall walk in Theth is manageable for most families.
  • · Day 8 is long and the Theth road is twisting — plan breaks.

Campervans

good

A rewarding campervan route if you use campsites and avoid old-town streets.

  • · Campsites near Berat, Gjirokastër, Ksamil, Himarë, Dhërmi, Vlorë, Shkodër and Theth.
  • · Park below the old towns of Berat and Gjirokastër and walk up.
  • · Check current road conditions before driving to Theth.

Motorhomes

moderate

The coast and main roads are fine; mountain roads need care.

  • · Use the Llogara tunnel route rather than the mountain pass in a large motorhome.
  • · Ksamil and Himarë are congested in summer — park at a campsite.
  • · The Theth road is narrow and steep in places — larger motorhomes should consider staying in Shkodër and taking a minibus.

Electric vehicles

EV charging is limited and concentrated around Tirana, Durrës and a few coastal hotels. A combustion or hybrid car is far more practical for this route, especially in the south and the mountains.

  • · No motorway vignette; the Kalimash tunnel (Durrës–Kukës road) is the main toll, and it's not on this route by default.
  • · Fuel up in Sarandë, Himarë or Vlorë before Llogara and in Shkodër before Theth.

Practical travel notes

Before you drive in Albania
Driving is assertive: expect sudden overtaking, slow vehicles, pedestrians and animals on the road, and roundabouts used loosely. Main roads are generally good; rural and mountain roads can be narrow, potholed and unlit. Avoid driving after dark outside towns.
Road conditions
The SH4 and coastal SH8 are well surfaced but twisting. Mountain roads have steep sections, few barriers and occasional rockfall. Allow more time than satnavs suggest.
Fuel
Fuel stations are common on main roads but thin out in the mountains. Fill up before the Riviera, Llogara and the Theth road.
Cash and cards
Cards work in cities and larger hotels; many guesthouses, small restaurants and car parks are cash only. ATMs are easy to find in towns but not in Theth.
Parking
Paid car parks in town centres and at major sights; attendants often collect cash. Avoid blocking narrow old-town streets in Berat and Gjirokastër.
Mobile data
Good 4G in towns and along the coast. Signal is patchy in the mountains — download offline maps before Theth.
Vehicle hire
Check your hire terms allow mountain roads and, if relevant, cross-border travel to Montenegro or Kosovo (you need a Green Card insurance extension). Inspect the car for existing damage.
Mountain-road awareness
Use low gears on descents, sound your horn on blind bends, give way where the road is wider, and check weather and road conditions before Llogara and Theth.
Campervans
Campsites are growing along the Riviera, near Berat, Gjirokastër, Shkodër and Theth. Rules on wild camping are not always clear — use campsites or ask permission.
Motorhomes
Fine on the main roads. Avoid driving into Berat's and Gjirokastër's old towns, take the Llogara tunnel rather than the pass in a large vehicle, and check current suitability before the Theth road.
Travelling with children
Beaches, castles and short walks suit families. Long winding drives and the Theth road can be tiring for car-sick children.

Roadly tips

  • · Don't drive after dark outside towns.
  • · Carry lek in cash for guesthouses, car parks and rural cafés.
  • · Fill up before Llogara and the Theth road.
  • · Try byrek, tavë kosi, qifqi in Gjirokastër, fresh seafood on the Riviera and mountain lamb in Theth.
  • · Book July and August stays on the Riviera well ahead.

  • Best travelled June and September; May and early October are also good.
  • July and August bring heavy traffic and crowds on the Riviera and at Ksamil and the Blue Eye.
  • Theth's road and high trails can be affected by snow from late autumn to spring — access is never guaranteed outside summer.
