About this route

A warm, colourful loop through the heart of Andalusia. Start in Málaga, climb inland to Ronda on its dramatic gorge, then wind through the whitewashed villages of the Sierra de Grazalema — Setenil, Zahara, Grazalema and Arcos. Drop down to Cádiz on the Atlantic, taste sherry in Jerez, then spend two days in Seville before Córdoba's Mezquita and two more in Granada for the Alhambra. Finish with a relaxed Mediterranean day in Nerja and Frigiliana. The loop is roughly 590 miles (945 km) and about 14–15 hours of actual driving, with plenty of time for tapas, flamenco and history.

Who this route suits

Families

excellent

Castles, beaches, caves and gentle driving days — great with children outside high summer.

  • · Plaza de España, the Alcázar gardens and the Nerja Caves are big hits.
  • · Cádiz's La Caleta and Nerja have calm town beaches.
  • · Driving days are mostly under 2 hr 30 min.
  • · Summer heat inland is a real concern for young children.

Campervans

good

A well-equipped campervan region with plenty of campsites and motorhome areas.

  • · Use campsites or áreas de autocaravanas outside the cities and take buses in.
  • · Small vans can park at the edge of white villages; larger vans use signed car parks.
  • · Grazalema mountain roads are fine for campervans driven carefully.

Motorhomes

good

Easy on the main roads; just stay out of old towns and village centres.

  • · Never follow satnav into the old towns of Seville, Córdoba, Granada or the white villages.
  • · Seville, Córdoba and Granada have campsites with bus links to the centre.
  • · Setenil's centre is very tight — park on the approach roads.

Electric vehicles

Charging is good in Málaga, Seville, Córdoba and Granada and along the main autovías, thinner in the Sierra de Grazalema. Charge in Ronda before the mountain day.

  • · Most autovías are toll-free.
  • · Fuel is easy to find; fill up in Ronda before the Grazalema mountain roads.

Practical travel notes

Best White Villages on this trip
Setenil de las Bodegas (houses built under overhanging rock), Zahara de la Sierra (castle above a turquoise reservoir), Grazalema (a mountain village in Spain's rainiest corner), and Arcos de la Frontera (a clifftop town above the plain). Olvera and Ubrique are easy extras.
Driving side
Right. Motorways are excellent and mostly toll-free.
Historic centres
Seville, Córdoba, Granada, Cádiz and Málaga restrict traffic in their old towns with cameras (low-emission or access-controlled zones). Use public car parks on the edge or a hotel garage registered with the city.
White village streets
Extremely narrow, steep and often one-way. Park at the edge of each village and walk in.
Mountain roads
The Grazalema roads (including the Puerto de las Palomas) are well surfaced but twisting, with steep gradients and goats or cyclists on bends.
Heat
Carry water, avoid midday sightseeing in summer, and never leave people or pets in a parked car.
Campervans
Campsites near Málaga, Ronda, Grazalema, Cádiz, Seville, Córdoba, Granada and Nerja. Many towns have signed motorhome areas (áreas de autocaravanas).
Motorhomes
Fine on motorways and main roads. Avoid driving into old towns and white villages; the Grazalema mountain roads are manageable but slow.
Travelling with children
Castles, beaches, the Nerja Caves and Plaza de España suit families. Plan around the heat.
Ferries
Optional extension: car ferries to Morocco (Tangier, Ceuta) run from Tarifa and Algeciras. Check insurance and hire-company permission first.

Roadly tips

  • · Book Alhambra tickets as early as possible.
  • · Park outside old towns and white villages and walk in.
  • · Eat late like locals: lunch from 2pm, dinner from 9pm.
  • · Try salmorejo, pescaíto frito, jamón ibérico, Grazalema cheese, Jerez sherry and free tapas in Granada.
  • · Avoid sightseeing in the midday heat from June to September.
