About this route

Short drives. Big experiences. Start and finish in Menai Bridge, arriving from mainland Britain over the A55 Britannia Bridge. Follow the Menai Strait to Beaumaris and Penmon, turn north for Moelfre, Parys Mountain and Cemaes, then explore Holy Island, South Stack and the western beaches. Newborough Forest, Llanddwyn Beach and the tide-dependent walk towards Ynys Llanddwyn make an unhurried finale. The recommended four days include three nights; a focused three-day weekend and a richer five-day walking-and-gardens version are also available. Eryri and Ireland remain optional onward adventures, never part of the standard loop.

One island. Four unforgettable days.

Anglesey deserves more than a quick mainland day trip. Four varied days leave room for experiences rather than padding the route with miles.

  • Day 1: castles, Menai Strait and the eastern coastline.
  • Day 2: copper landscapes and the wild north coast.
  • Day 3: South Stack, cliffs and western beaches.
  • Day 4: Newborough, Llanddwyn and the return to Menai Bridge.

Day by day

Arrive via the A55 Britannia Bridge. Make Beaumaris town and castle one 2–3-hour visit, continue to Penmon, then pass Benllech before finishing in Moelfre. Shorten the arrival stroll or beach stop if arriving late.

Roads: A545 · B5109 · A5025

  • Penmon’s approach is narrow: check current access and parking. Large vehicles can base in Beaumaris and arrange a suitable local transfer rather than follow a shortest-route lane.

Weather on this route

Spring: flowers, wildlife opportunities and quieter beaches; breeding birds need space. Dates beyond the 16-day forecast window show a seasonal outlook.

Extend the trip

Continue Your Adventure — Eryri / Snowdonia

After finishing in Menai Bridge, plan a separate extension through Llanberis, Caernarfon, Beddgelert or Betws-y-Coed. Yr Wyddfa requires its own weather, access and walking plan; Eryri is not included in the four-day island itinerary.

Add 1–3 days according to interests and ability

Continue to Ireland — Holyhead → Dublin

A separate onward adventure from Holyhead. Return to the port after the island circuit and check current operator timetables, ticket conditions and vehicle requirements. No sailing times, prices or ferry legs are included in the standard route.

Who this route suits

Families

excellent

Short drives, castles, beaches, forests and wildlife make a strong family itinerary.

  • · Use Beaumaris, village beaches and short forest routes for younger children.
  • · South Stack’s level viewpoint approach is distinct from rugged paths and lighthouse steps.
  • · Replace a long island walk with beach or forest time if tides, conditions or ability require it.
  • · Check live facility and accessibility details; family friendly is not an all-route pushchair guarantee.

Campervans

good

Strong touring bases, with careful planning for coastal access.

  • · Search licensed campsites and touring parks around Moelfre / Benllech, Holyhead / Holy Island and Rhosneigr / Aberffraw.
  • · Confirm pitch availability, waste disposal, water and vehicle dimensions directly.
  • · No overnight parking or camping at South Stack or Newborough.
  • · Penmon and other coastal access lanes require local checks; Park4Night listings do not override restrictions.

Motorhomes

moderate

The main-road circuit works as a touring plan; attraction approaches need individual checks.

  • · Use the A55 and main A-road corridors rather than narrow shortcuts.
  • · Confirm coastal parking height limits and manoeuvring space before committing to Penmon, South Stack or small villages.
  • · Stay in licensed touring parks and arrange suitable local transport for access that does not suit your vehicle.
  • · No attraction car park is presented as a legal overnight stop.

Electric vehicles

Short daily legs can suit an electric car, but this itinerary does not promise chargers or availability. Check current charging providers and confirm overnight charging directly. Roadly’s existing EV vehicle selection remains available; advanced charger planning is not added here.

  • · No ferry crossing is required for the Anglesey circuit.
  • · Roadly calculates driving distance and time using real Mapbox road routes, including the key attraction access points.
  • · Use town fuel stops and check current parking/private-access charges locally.

Best Walks on the Anglesey Road Trip

Choose the short viewpoint option or a longer outing. Durations below are planning allowances, not measured trail times; follow official signed routes and check current access.

  • Penmon & Moelfre: short coastal out-and-backs from the village or headland parking; allow 30–60 minutes. Uneven shore and exposed sections mean easy does not mean step-free. Check access and keep dogs controlled.
  • Parys Mountain: the level Great Opencast viewing-area walk is the shorter choice; allow 60–90 minutes for a signed rough-ground outing. Do not enter workings or restricted areas; keep children close and dogs on leads.
  • Cemaes: choose a harbour-and-beach stroll or a longer Coastal Path section; allow 30–60 minutes. Check tides and local beach dog rules; clifftop extensions require care.
  • South Stack: the level approach from Ellin’s Tower car park reaches the outside viewpoint. Longer coastal routes are rugged; allow 60–120 minutes and use sturdy footwear. Dogs must remain controlled around breeding birds.
  • Aberffraw: allow about an hour for a village-to-beach outing across sand and dunes; not a universal pushchair route. Park legally in the village and check dog restrictions and livestock.
  • Newborough & Ynys Llanddwyn: signed forest routes offer shorter options. Allow 2–3 hours for a longer beach-and-island exploration from the main beach car park; soft sand, tides and exposed ground can change the effort. Check NRW trail distances and notices before choosing a route.

Best Beaches Along the Route

Enjoy a few beaches properly rather than trying to spend hours at every bay.

  • Family beach choices: Benllech and Cemaes offer village-based beach breaks; check current facilities and conditions rather than assume lifeguards or baby-changing facilities.
  • West-coast atmosphere: Rhosneigr is the watersports and potential sunset stop. Only book through a verified provider, with suitable sea conditions and ability.
  • Scenic beach and walking: Newborough / Llanddwyn is the signature finale; Aberffraw pairs village, dunes and a sandy walk.
  • Trearddur Bay is an optional lunch-and-beach break, not another compulsory long beach visit. Seasonal dog restrictions vary by beach: check signs and council notices.

Wildlife on Anglesey

Wildlife varies by season and weather; no sightings are guaranteed.

  • South Stack is important breeding habitat for seabirds including guillemots and razorbills, with choughs also associated with the coastal landscape. Stay on paths and keep dogs controlled.
  • Penmon gives views towards Puffin Island. Seabirds, seals and seasonal puffin opportunities may be possible with a verified boat provider; island views do not guarantee puffin sightings.
  • Forest, dunes and beaches around Newborough are sensitive habitats. Keep your distance from wildlife, respect dog restrictions and leave no litter.

Taste of Anglesey

Discover current local food options in Menai Bridge, Beaumaris, Moelfre, Cemaes and Rhosneigr rather than relying on a fixed restaurant list.

  • Look for Welsh produce, seafood, Welsh cakes, farm-shop supplies, local meat, ice cream and pub food. Choose cafés and restaurants using current place information.
  • Welsh is an everyday language on Ynys Môn. English and Welsh destination names are used respectfully; proper place names remain recognisable on maps.
  • Accommodation searches follow the actual overnight areas: Night 1 Moelfre / Benllech, Night 2 Holyhead / Holy Island, Night 3 Rhosneigr / Aberffraw. Check cottage, B&B, hotel and touring-pitch availability directly.

Visitor Access & Coastal Safety

Check the official visitor pages shortly before travel. Opening, ticketing, parking charges and restrictions can change.

  • Beaumaris Castle: no onsite car park; use town parking. Some areas are level while upper routes use stairs. Cadw provides current opening, tickets, accessibility and dog rules.
  • Penmon: confirm private-road conditions and Point parking locally; narrow approaches are not automatically suitable for large vehicles. Lleiniog’s height barrier applies to a different car park.
  • South Stack: distinguish the accessible viewpoint approach from steps, rugged trails and lighthouse access. Strictly no overnight parking or camping in RSPB car parks.
  • Newborough: use designated car parks and check current NRW access, trail and dog notices. No overnight stays or camping. Check tide times before the Ynys Llanddwyn walk; never cross flooded ground.

Practical travel notes

Arrival & finish
Use the A55 Britannia Bridge as the mainland gateway, then start and finish around Menai Bridge. The standard circuit stays on Anglesey and Holy Island; no ferry is required.
Driving in Wales
Drive on the left and follow posted limits, including signed 20 mph areas. Most main-road driving is straightforward; coastal lanes, town centres and attraction approaches can be narrow.
Larger vehicles
Mapbox and external maps do not assess your vehicle’s height, width, length or weight. Prefer A55, A5025 and A4080 corridors, confirm coastal access and parking, and arrange a suitable local transfer when necessary.
Parking & overnight rules
Use signed visitor parking and check current charges, barriers and time limits. Never use attraction parking as a substitute for a licensed overnight campsite. South Stack and Newborough prohibit overnight stays.
Coastal safety & tides
Check tide times, weather and official notices before beach or island walks. The Ynys Llanddwyn approach can be cut off. Never cross flooded sections; choose forest or beach options instead.
Dogs
Check each beach’s seasonal restrictions, NRW Newborough rules and attraction policies. Keep dogs controlled near livestock and nesting birds; confirm dog acceptance with accommodation providers.
Fuel & mobile signal
Plan fuel stops in larger towns and download maps before coastal outings; coverage can vary. Charging locations and availability must be checked through a current provider, not assumed.
Family pace
Use short viewpoints, village strolls and beach visits instead of longer exposed walks with young children. Check current toilets, baby-changing and accessibility details with each attraction.
Holyhead ferry traffic
Allow extra time around ferry arrivals and departures. Travel to Dublin is an optional separate journey with current operator timetables, tickets and vehicle conditions.

Roadly tips

  • · Give Beaumaris town and castle a combined 2–3-hour visit.
  • · Treat South Stack and Llanddwyn as experiences, not quick photo stops.
  • · Shorten walks when weather, tides or children’s energy require it.
  • · Book licensed touring pitches; South Stack and Newborough are not overnight stops.
  • · Check current visitor notices and local dog restrictions before travel.
