About this route

The Ring Road is 1,332 km of paved highway around Iceland, and the temptation is always to do it too fast. Seven days is the minimum for a fair circuit; ten gives you time for the east fjords, Mývatn and Snæfellsnes without daily five-hour drives. This template stays entirely on paved Route 1 and its sealed side roads — the Highlands and F-roads are a separate kind of trip requiring a proper 4x4 and a seasonal opening.

Campervans

Iceland is built for campervans in summer, with a clear campsite culture.

  • · Strong crosswinds affect high-sided vehicles; check wind forecasts before open sections.

Motorhomes

Fine on Route 1, with wind the main consideration.

Electric vehicles

Iceland's charging network now covers the full Ring Road, though remote chargers can be single-unit and busy in summer. Roadly EV mode will build charge-aware daily plans when your vehicle is configured.

  • · Only one toll: the Vaðlaheiði tunnel near Akureyri, payable online.
  • · Fuel is among the most expensive in Europe — check current prices at the pump.

Currency
Icelandic króna (ISK). Iceland is effectively cashless — cards work everywhere, including fuel pumps.
Road type
Route 1 is paved throughout, mostly single carriageway with single-lane bridges. Gravel side roads are common; F-roads are a different, restricted category.
Tolls
Only the Vaðlaheiði tunnel; pay online within the operator's window.
Fuel
Stations are spaced widely in the east and north. Refuel whenever you are below half a tank; many pumps are unstaffed and require a card with a PIN.
Wind
Wind is the main hazard. Hold car doors firmly, and take official wind warnings seriously — door damage is not usually covered by standard insurance.
Campervans
Overnighting outside designated campsites is prohibited. Campsite coverage is good in summer and thin in winter.
Supplies
Bónus and Krónan supermarkets in the larger towns are far cheaper than roadside options.

Roadly tips

  • · Check road and weather conditions each morning before setting off — conditions change fast.
  • · Refuel at every second town in the east and north.
  • · Book the glacier lagoon boat and any ice-cave tour ahead in summer.
  • · Do not walk on the black sand at Reynisfjara's water line; sneaker waves there are genuinely dangerous.
  • · Leave the Highlands for a separate trip with the right vehicle.
