About this route

Riviera. Provence. Mountains. Mediterranean. Fly to Nice, collect a car and follow a complete eight-day, seven-night circuit: a relaxed arrival, perfume heritage and Route Napoléon, a full Verdon day, Valensole and the Luberon, the flavours of Aix, Cassis and the Calanques, then Saint-Tropez and the Riviera. Six- and seven-day versions compress the journey; ten days adds breathing room in the Luberon and Cassis rather than unnecessary new bases. All driving distances and times are calculated from road routes; stops, parking and summer traffic need extra time.

From canyon roads to Mediterranean coast.

Eight days through the very best of Provence and the French Riviera, with one airport and seven nights in carefully placed bases.

  • Nice NCE arrival and departure; airport car pickup and return avoid a one-way rental itinerary.
  • Two nights in Moustiers give the Verdon time to breathe.
  • A compact or standard car suits paved roads; an SUV is not required. Confirm deposits, age, excess, insurance and fuel policy with your actual rental provider.
  • The route is free to use; optional stays and activities have their own provider costs.

Day by day

Collect your car at Nice Airport and settle into Nice. Early arrival: promenade, Vieux Nice and a relaxed café stop. Late arrival: check in, eat and start the journey tomorrow.

Roads: Airport access roads

  • NiceMust see~120 min

The Promenade des Anglais, Vieux Nice, Place Masséna and seafront markets. An early arrival allows an easy stroll; a late arrival means check-in and dinner only.

  • Use signed public parking outside historic streets; check height barriers and local signs. Large vehicles should use a verified campsite or aire and public transport. Never overnight in attraction car parks.
  • No assumption of an early flight arrival. Check your rental provider’s actual collection terms and desk hours.

Weather on this route

Spring and autumn favour village visits and cooler walks. Winter never means lavender in bloom. Dates beyond the 16-day forecast window show a seasonal outlook.

Extend the trip

Extend Your Trip – Nice & Monaco

Add 1–2 nights after the circuit for Nice, Èze, Monaco or Menton. Choose a small number of outings; Monaco is not part of the standard eight-day route. Confirm cross-border rental permission if keeping the car.

Optional 1–2 additional nights

Drive from the UK

Add your own journey to Nice using the existing trip customisation. Choose Channel Tunnel or ferry and plan transit nights separately; they are not included in the standard eight-day itinerary.

Separate approach journey

Who this route suits

Families

good

Family friendly when you choose lake, beach, boat and short-walk options rather than strenuous canyon hikes.

  • · Nice, the lake, Cassis harbour and Antibes are strong relaxed choices.
  • · Confirm toilets, pushchair access and lifeguard arrangements locally; historic lanes can be steep or cobbled.
  • · Replace exposed or closed hikes with town visits, an operating boat trip or permitted beach time.
  • · Keep arrival light and stop frequently on winding roads.

Campervans

moderate

Best with a compact camper and verified campsites outside busy towns.

  • · Use signed public parking outside historic streets; check height barriers and local signs. Large vehicles should use a verified campsite or aire and public transport. Never overnight in attraction car parks.
  • · Verify D952 conditions and dimensions before the mountain day; D23 is optional, not a default route.
  • · Use current campsite/aire discovery for water, waste and overnight rules; confirm facilities with operators.

Motorhomes

challenging

Large vehicles need extra access checks and peripheral bases; the default route is not height/weight-aware.

  • · Check narrow Verdon sections and every vehicle restriction before routing. Ask local road authorities about an appropriate alternative if unsuitable.
  • · Stay outside Gordes, Cassis and Saint-Tropez and use available public transport.
  • · Use signed public parking outside historic streets; check height barriers and local signs. Large vehicles should use a verified campsite or aire and public transport. Never overnight in attraction car parks.

Electric vehicles

Plan airport and overnight charging around Nice, Moustiers, the Luberon, Aix, Cassis and the Riviera. Mountain climbs, heat and air-conditioning affect consumption. Verify working chargers, connectors and backup options through your provider; Roadly does not yet calculate charging stops or battery state for this trip.

  • · Autoroute sections can be tolled; check current operator information rather than assuming a fixed charge.
  • · Fuel or charge before mountain sections and before airport return, according to your hire company’s actual policy.

Verdon roads, viewpoints & coastal access

Official references describe standing rules, not whether access is open today. Check the relevant road and park information before each outing; signs, closures and vehicle restrictions override navigation.

  • Route Napoléon: the itinerary uses only the Grasse–Castellane section. Check Alpes-Maritimes road conditions, then the relevant Verdon road information for the canyon approach.
  • Verdon: never stop on a road edge for photographs. At Point Sublime, use signed parking and the signed short viewpoint path; verify walking distance and accessibility locally. Allow about 30–45 minutes rather than parking on the carriageway.
  • D23 Route des Crêtes: normally seasonal, with a one-way section. The signed clockwise direction and vehicle clearance must be checked before entry. It is an optional excursion, not a pre-authorised route; D71 is not an automatic alternative.
  • Calanques: the park’s seasonal fire-access system runs from June to September, with daily decisions for the next day. Verify the current status before walking; closures mean choosing another experience, not another trail entrance.
  • Cassis: consider Gorguettes relay parking when town parking is full; shuttles and timetables vary. Verify current larger-vehicle access rather than assuming all car parks accept motorhomes.

Best Walks on the Provence & Riviera Road Trip

Choose a currently open, suitable route and confirm the local trail sheet for distance, elevation, terrain and dog rules. The options below are deliberately modest; demanding canyon hikes need separate preparation.

  • Moustiers village: allow 30–60 minutes for a self-paced lower-village stroll. Distance and ascent depend on your streets; uneven paving and upper steps limit pushchairs. Carry water, park in public parking and verify dogs locally.
  • Roussillon ochre trail: the official visitor listing suggests around 30–60 minutes depending on the signed route. Check the current trail length, elevation and opening before buying entry; dusty/uneven paths need suitable shoes and water. Do not assume step-free access.
  • Verdon relaxed option: signed viewpoint walks and lakeside time. Active option: choose a currently open route from the park’s local trail guidance, checking exact distance, ascent, water and parking before starting. Blanc-Martel is not a casual family substitute.
  • Calanques: a short Port-Miou coastal outing or an authorised boat trip is the relaxed choice. Longer canyon walks require a current trail sheet, sturdy footwear and an early start; the park advises at least 1.5 litres of water per person for a half-day, more in heat. Confirm dogs and fire access first.
  • Riviera promenades: Nice and Antibes offer shorter seafront walks. Choose distance to suit the party, check local surfaces and steps, and avoid swimming or exposed paths in unsafe weather.

Best Beaches Along the Route

Lake, sea and harbour days balance the mountain driving. Water conditions, seasonal supervision, dogs and accessible facilities must be checked locally; none are guaranteed.

  • Best lake day: Lac de Sainte-Croix near Les Salles-sur-Verdon for permitted beach time and operating watersports. Check wind, water levels and local bathing advice.
  • Best city coast: Nice’s pebbly seafront for a relaxed promenade and permitted swimming in suitable conditions; water shoes can help, but never assume lifeguards or calm water.
  • Best scenery: Cassis and an operating authorised Calanques cruise. Boat trips are weather-dependent and do not automatically include swimming.
  • Best relaxing beach option: Saint-Tropez area beaches, chosen around parking, budget and local access. Check beach-specific dogs and family facilities.
  • Best final Riviera stroll: Antibes seafront and old-town walls, only if your flight schedule permits. For early flights return directly to the airport.

Taste of Provence

Markets and meals are part of the journey, not a fixed restaurant checklist. Look up current business results and operating dates for your chosen day.

  • Nice: fresh produce, pastries, tapenade and Mediterranean flavours around Vieux Nice; verify market days before relying on one.
  • Luberon and Aix: olive oil, local cheeses, seasonal produce and Provençal cooking. Aix is the main food-focused day, with time for a longer meal.
  • Cassis and Saint-Tropez: seafood and coastal restaurants; check current menus, accessibility and reservations through the actual business.
  • Optional Provence rosé, Cassis or Luberon tastings: use organised transport, walking experiences or a designated driver. Never drink before driving.

Valensole: lavender or Provence countryside?

The plateau is worth visiting without flowers. Lavender is a seasonal possibility, not a year-round promise; weather and harvest can change the best time each year.

  • Late June and July may overlap flowering, but consult current local visitor reports before planning photography. No date guarantees bloom.
  • Outside that window focus on villages, olive-growing landscapes and local produce. Sunflowers are also seasonal, not a replacement guaranteed every month.
  • Use suitable parking rather than stopping on the busy D6. Respect private land, cultivated fields and working farmers.

Driving in France & Nice Airport return

Consult current official rules and your hire company before travel. This advice is not a substitute for road signs, insurance terms or your airline’s check-in requirements.

  • Drive on the right, read speed limits in km/h and obey the limit for your vehicle and conditions. Allow for roundabouts, tolls, rural bends and urban low-emission rules; check Crit’Air requirements for your actual route.
  • UK visitors: carry your driving licence and required vehicle/insurance documentation. GOV.UK notes that UK photocard licences do not require an IDP in the EU; paper and some other licences require separate checks.
  • Nice Airport: rental collection and return use the Car Rental Center by Terminal 2 behind P5. Follow signs and the company’s actual designated return instructions, especially out of hours.
  • Check fuel or charge policy, return hours, deposits, excess and cover with your provider. Keep enough time for rental return and airline check-in; remove final Riviera stops when time is tight.

Driving in France from the UK
Drive on the right; speed signs use km/h. Check current official licence, insurance and vehicle-document requirements, toll rules and Crit’Air/low-emission restrictions before travelling. Roadside signs and current rules override the itinerary.
Hire-car terms
Compact, standard or automatic cars are practical. EVs and convertibles depend on availability. Check age limits, deposit, excess, cover, fuel/charge policy and cross-border permission with your actual provider; no provider terms are assumed.
Dogs
Check each accommodation, beach, trail, national park and boat operator’s current dog policy. French beaches are not universally dog-friendly; keep water and shade available.
