About this route

A complete loop of the Mediterranean's largest island. Start in lively Catania, drive up the slopes of Mount Etna, then follow the coast to Taormina and Syracuse's island old town of Ortigia. Cross the baroque south-east through Noto, Modica and Ragusa, stand among the Greek temples of Agrigento, and head west for the salt pans of Marsala and Trapani, hilltop Erice and the beach at San Vito Lo Capo. Finish with the markets and palaces of Palermo, the beach town of Cefalù, and a drive through the island's interior back to Catania. The loop is roughly 700 miles (1,130 km) and about 22 hours of actual driving, with plenty of time for food, beaches and history.

Who this route suits

Families

excellent

Beaches, a volcano and short driving days — great with children.

  • · Silvestri Craters on Etna are an easy, exciting walk for children.
  • · Isola Bella, San Vito Lo Capo and Cefalù have sandy or shallow beaches.
  • · Granita and arancini make food stops easy.
  • · Ancient sites can be hot and exposed — bring hats and water.

Campervans

good

A good campervan loop if you stay outside the historic centres.

  • · Campsites near Taormina, Syracuse, Agrigento, San Vito Lo Capo and Cefalù.
  • · Many agriturismos welcome campervans.
  • · Narrow streets in the hill towns — park below and walk.

Motorhomes

moderate

Main roads are easy; hill towns and city centres are not.

  • · Avoid driving into Taormina, Erice, Modica and Ragusa Ibla.
  • · Use campsites near Palermo and take public transport into the city.
  • · The road up to Erice is steep and winding — take the cable car if it's running.

Electric vehicles

Charging is improving in the cities and along the motorways but is thinner in the interior and hill towns. Plan charging around Catania, Syracuse, Agrigento, Trapani and Palermo.

  • · Tolls on the A18 (Catania–Messina) and A20 (Palermo–Messina); the A19 Palermo–Catania and A29 are toll-free.
  • · Expect paid parking at most attractions and old towns.

Practical travel notes

Best time to visit
April–June and September–October. July and August are very hot and busy.
Driving side
Right. Expect assertive local driving, especially in Catania and Palermo.
ZTL zones
Most historic centres (Ortigia, Taormina, Palermo, Cefalù, Noto) have limited-traffic zones (ZTL) with camera fines. Park outside and walk unless your hotel registers your car.
Parking
Blue lines are paid, white usually free, yellow reserved. Use signed car parks outside the old towns.
Fuel
Plentiful; many stations are self-service at night. Fuel is often cheaper away from motorways.
Roads
Motorways are good; some secondary roads are bumpy and narrow, especially in hill towns like Erice, Ragusa Ibla and Modica.
Campervans
Many campsites along the coasts and agriturismos that welcome campers. Wild camping is generally not permitted.
Motorhomes
Fine on the main roads. Avoid driving into Taormina, Erice, Ragusa Ibla and Modica — use car parks below the towns and the shuttle buses or cable cars.
Heat
Carry water and plan archaeological sites for early morning or late afternoon in summer.
Mobile signal
Generally good; patchy in the interior.
Travelling with children
Beaches, Etna's lava landscapes and short driving days make it family friendly. The ancient sites can be hot and exposed.
Travelling with dogs
Many beaches restrict dogs in summer; look for designated dog beaches and check ahead at sites and restaurants.
Ferries
Optional extensions: ferries to the Aeolian Islands from Milazzo, to mainland Italy from Messina, and to Malta from Pozzallo.

Roadly tips

  • · Leave the car outside the old towns — ZTL fines are common.
  • · Visit the Valley of the Temples early or late to avoid the midday heat.
  • · Try arancini, granita with brioche, cannoli, pasta alla Norma, Modica chocolate and Trapani couscous.
  • · Check Etna conditions on the morning you go, and bring warm layers even in summer.
  • · Book August accommodation well ahead.
